Furnace & AC Tune Ups – Necessity or Gimmick?

| The necessity of a heat tune up on a gas furnace is to check for any safety failures such as a cracked heat chamber or faulty safety roll out or limit switches. The problem with this is most companies have these fancy cameras and show you something like a crack in the heat exchanger which you have never seen one so you are wondering if they are telling you the truth and why are they checking for a cracked heat chamber on a 7 year old furnace when they called you to do a tune up on your furnace for $69 dollars or were they just trying to give there guys something to do? The only problem is for $69 dollars is they better sell you something. First they try after the system by scaring you with safety problems or if your system is fairly new then you will only end up with either a thermostat or a compressor contact or capacitor so they can afford the $69 dollar tune up all the calling and gas in the trucks etc. So if it was my house I would invest in a carbon monoxide detector and keep the techs out of my house unless it broke because you cannot vacuum out a rusty chamber when they don’t rust anymore.
AC tune ups is another marketing game they play rolling the dice that 1 out of 10 will need a new system and the other 9 will need a indoor coil or they will just go back to trying to afford to send a tech out there with the chance of nothing so they will just sell you a capacitor you needed or did you really? All you need to do is clean condenser with coil cleaner and use pleated filters and make sure you do not have any return leaks. The reason I know this is I joined a franchise back in 2000 and learn how to play their game and I decided I would not want to be treated like that if I had no idea of how an AC works. So make sure on all tune ups that you get a good job. It is always better to watch them clean the AC with coil cleaner and drain and tighten electrical wires on breaker and contacts. |
